french_strikes

Yesterday, (Thursday, January 29th, 2008) French folk was on strike to protest the handling of economic crisis of the government. The strike began at 8 PM, Wednesday and is to end at 8 AM, Friday.

As a result of these strikes, transportation, education and health services in the country were disrupted for a day. Ministry of the Interior stated that a million of people demonstrated in “Black Thursday”, whereas the French unions reported the number of the people protested as 2.5 million. Even though demonstrations disrupted the life in some cities for a day, the attendance to the strikes were less than expected; consequently, authorities reported that it was more like “Gray Thursday” than “Black Thursday”.

How could an earthquake change the direction of history just in a night?

coral2

Historians mentioned that it was built up 3,800 years ago, before the Maya civilization. Lost city Coral was the most magnificent city of the South America and was located on the coast of Peru, on the north of the capital Lima. Besides, this city vanished just in a night because of an earthquake.

The pyramids found in this city, especially the biggest named “Piramide Mayor”, attracted the historians’ attention for a long time. Historians said, “If that earthquake didn’t happen, the Maya civilization could not exist and the existent civilization would develop. Now, we can see how an earthquake changed the history just in a night.”

Now that a city built up before the Maya civilization, the lost city Coral, has been found, I wonder how many lost cities are there that are waiting for historians to be discovered.

P.S. You can find some rests and animations from the lost city Coral in the gallery below.

Obama's first step to world peace

barack_obama

In his second week of presidency, the 44th president of US, Barack Obama reached out to Muslim world. Barack Obama gave his first interview to a Dubai-based TV, Al-Arabiya. Moreover, his words clarified that he wanted to change America’s view to Muslims.

Obama said, “My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy. He continued, “We sometimes make mistakes. We have not been perfect.”

These interview of US’s new president made clear that their target are Islamic terrorist organizations, not innocent Muslims. By giving the first interview to an Arabic TV and using peaceful words way different from the previous presidents, Barack Obama really gives an undertaking of hope.

Eternity has been discovered!

eternalspecy

Eternity is chosen as subject of many films, stories and novels, and now, it became real! A specy of jellyfish which lives in deep ocean is found to be immortal. Scientists noticed that this specy called Turritopsis Nutricula could go back to its childhood after its adulthood; this cycle goes on and on. Furthermore, this specy can only die when it is killed just like the Elfs of Tolkien.

The famous Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute of Panama stated that this specy of jellyfish is being rejuvenated by sex. According to this statement, when this specy which has a height of 5 milimeters grows up and cannot reproduce, evolves genetically and returns to its childhood. Moreover, this process of evolving goes on and on which makes this specy eternal.

Now that the first eternal specy has been found, can scientists use this situated information to make humans eternal? Many people want to be eternal and live forever. In my opinion, life would get very boring if you had a chance to live forever; consequently, I hope that scientists can find eternity and help the science to move on, but eternity is something that I do not want to have!

Loss of Jobs Due to Recession

economic_crisis

As we all know, the economic crisis is growing up everyday; moreover, this forces the companies to dismiss their employees. Even the largest companies of the world need to dismiss some of their employees in order to survive from crisis.

For example, Philips, Netherlands-based electronics giant, announced that 6,000 jobs would be lost worldwide.

ING is a Dutch-based finance group which would dismiss 7,000 staff to save billions of dollars.

Pfizer is an US-based medical company which will also deal with loss of jobs due to recession.

These three companies are one of the best in their industry, and even these companies are facing some problems which led them to dismiss their staff in an effort to save billions of dollars.

I wonder if all leaders around the world would come together and find a solution for the recession. It is now a common opinion that The World Economic Forum in Davos has became a place for politics more than economics; therefore, a bigger movement is needed which should make everyone involved about the crisis.
